Seeing a portrait and liking it, anyone can do that. Knowing why you like it, that takes study. Creating a great portrait takes study, talent and lots of practice.
Rembrandt was the master of light and some of his students continued in that craft, but as abstract art become more popular, artist lost the secret of light.
As my mentor states: "We artists don't paint objects, we paint the effect of light hitting objects. That goes for landscapes, that's why the masters painted the golden hours, but it most certainly goes for portraits.
This self portrait is a good example. A picture like this, with the highlights in the eyes, you don't take by accident. 358 of the 360 degrees are wrong, for the light, for the light height, for the camera and for the camera height. Even many professional photgraphers often fail to capture this light, not surprising if you look at the odds.
If you like math, 2 of 360 is 1 in 180 to the power of 4. It's literally 1 in a billion.
For a result like this, I first need to make a recording, during this session I have the model talk, the model and I can chat, or someone else, but the point is to have natural expressions and not just sit there looking pretty.
This can take a minute, so far is has never taken more than a minute twice, but it takes as long as it takes.
Spontaneous moments are often a micro-expression that last a fraction of a second, you get to know a person by those expressions, it is what makes them unique, and when you take photo's, these moments are impossible to capture, but they don't escape a recording.

The paintings I make can be compared to those decorating the walls in the Oval Office.
I can make them, but I like working with pastels better.
2 more examples of 30x40 CM, another selfportrait and a granddad. Proof that some professionals can indeed take a great foto.
Mister Kennedy next to the Ipad. Foto's with this light are rare and as an artist, I draw these for my own enjoyment. Of course if you are a loony lefty, there's no light can make this guy look interesting. (I'm a joker, I couldn't help myself and I have no communist clients anyway.)
On the royal Dutch website ( the oranjes) are only a few good foto's from an artist perspective. Amalia. 20x30 CM in shades of grey.
Pets
I can do pets, but for pets the experience of posing, and then seeing themself immortalized on the wall is not that special.

I can work from foto's you send me, but a more precise way is when I make a recording and/or photo. We work together to get some interesting light going with so called Rembrandt-lighting as goal. Rembrandt was the master of catching light on faces.
Rembrandt set the standard, I'm bringing it back.
